Anonymous girl

She have known friends, and enemies as well. One time, she had someone by the name she cannot remember anymore that they ended up pulling each and others’ hair for no reason! And as far as I know, that is the second time she bullied someone, for the first one happened in kinder, where she pushed a boy so hard, causing that boy to bump his wounded chin in the table (well thank God there’s no Guidance Office that time).

She has experienced being irritated by her seatmates who love asking favors, eating her snacks and using her new things without her approval. And what irritates her more is the fact that starting grade 3, she didn’t experience to be sung a HAPPY BIRTHDAY song from her dear classmates for her birthday falls under the semester break. But despite of those regretful facts, during her grade school days, she strive to graduate with flying colors, to make all the people around her, most especially her parents happy.

Huge fire

Really felt bad about it but we can not stop every accidents that happen. Although we were full of care qith everything, there would still be possibility of unexpected happenings. We just need to stay strong specially when everybody feels weak.

I went to the store with my mom and sister and when I came back the streets were lined with firetrucks. No one would tell us who’s house was on fire till one of my neighbors came over and yelled “ITS YOUR HOUSE!! ITS ON FIRE!!!” While I was gone the grill lit up and then the propane tank exploded and sprayed it across the back of my house. I wouldn’t stop crying for a month, it was hard for me in school because I had to stop my self from crying every 5 minutes. So… I stopped crying 2 months ago. Now im living in my driveway in a camper!

Room tour

Honestly, I do not have a room to call my own. Our house is too small to accommodate us, so we have to share rooms. But be not sorry for me, for though I live in a small bungalow, I find my solace here—our home is my refuge. From where you sit, I can describe our house from left to right, right to left, near to far or far to near. As you enter in our brown door, you are already in our living room. Continue walking. On you left is our humble room.

Inside the four corners of our room, you will see two drawers full of clean garments folded properly and other girly stuffs. On the left of the drawers is a double-deck bed where I lie down in deep, peaceful nights. Maybe it is not as soft as others’ cushions, but whenever I lay down in it as I sleep, it leads me to a night full of wonderful dreams. Under my bed are other paraphernalia such as portfolios and shoes. On your right is a cabinet with mirror. This is where we put our other belongings.

Our place

My mother left a note in my drawer which reads, “How you arrange your things determines your personality. If your things are in a chaotic arrangement, so you are.” I was startled for few seconds. That note is like a two-edged sword that cuts my heart into pieces. I was rebuked with love by my mother. Since that day, I realize that as a girl, I should arrange my things as much as possible, in apple pie order. I even included “being clean and orderly” in my New Year’s Resolution list. And to give you a glimpse of my little by little changes, I will take you to my room through a simple, yet detailed description.

But it is the place where my heart finds peace, a safe haven that gives me warmth when I am cold, and a shelter in the time of storm. Thank God for giving me a room with a family to call my own.

Scared

At the very moment I returned to my PC, a louder, more horrible sound was heard. It’s no more a whisper of a haunting person, but a roaring voice of a beast! My arterial pressure rose, my blood was shifted from my stomach and intestine to the heart! I screamed for horror and craved for help! I cried out and called my mom.
And having heard of my loud, but cracked voice, Mommy went out to look at what happened. I was stumbling for words and almost die because of fear. And you know what? While I was crying, a man came out laughing to the extent. I almost killed that person. He is the one behind those sounds and voices that were close to giving me a heart attack, trying to scare me. And he succeed! Because he really scared me! And do you know who is he? He is none other than my loving and caring father! He said he had done that thing in order for me to go to bed because it was already late. I just laughed after hearing that.

The monster

My heart beats fast. My sweat goes down through my very veins. My hair rises from the tip of my toe to my head. My teeth gnashes because of absolute fear. Tears fall down from my eyes and my blood screams from my nerves. I take a deep breath. Those memories of my childhood fear still linger in my mind which time can never erase. The feeling is just so real. And that breath taking event is the scariest, most horrifying experience I ever had.

It was a cold night in November, sometime in the year of 2007 when I had that terrible experience. I was in our house, sitting in front of my computer, doing my research homework in English III. I really need to finish this assignment that’s why I kept my mind focused on what I am doing and threw all my drowsiness away. All the members of my family were asleep and all my neighbors were already in bed too. I was the only one awake in the middle of that silent evening.

My question

Among all the country in the whole wide world, the Philippines has the shortest education cycle preparatory to university. Ours is 10 years; the rest of the world is 12. In short, we have a curriculum that, on paper, covers the same subject matter as the rest of the world but which we cram into 10, instead of 12 years.

This means that our teachers take all kinds of short cuts to try to cover the material or just simply do not attempt to cover the entire syllabus in a given year for lack of material time. This shortchanges our children’s education.” Maybe it is true that this is one of the reasons why many Filipino graduates become incompetent as compared to those who graduated from international universities. But the question is, “Are the additional two years in basic education the solution to the arising problems in our educational system?

The education

When I first heard the issue, I overlooked it. That when our professor asked if we are in favor of the additional two years in basic education, I immediately answered “yes” without looking at the whole scenario. I realized that there are some more solutions that must first be taken into account that there is still a number of education issues not yet resolved. For example, we must first attend to the primary problems about insufficient instructional materials such as textbooks and workbooks, lack of classrooms, incompetent teachers, illiteracy of students in technology, inconvenient school facilities and even the tremendous need for adequate school supplies.

Because if we will not able to solve these primary dilemmas, it would still profit us nothing even if we extend the years of schooling. If the government cannot even support every Filipino child with a ten-year learning process, what is the reason of adding two more years in the basic education? It is true that we will not just sit and watch our people die without tasting the goodness of education. But the extension of schooling years is not the solution. According to Abbe Dimnet, “Children have to be educated, but they have also to be left to educate themselves.”
